Tips for making your trip greener
There are plenty of ways you can make going on holiday a little more eco-friendly without having any impact on your enjoyment. Below are some ‘green’ suggestions to think about before and during your trip.
Things to do before you go away:
- Book direct flights. Planes burn a lot of fuel every time they take off and land; direct trips mean less take-offs and landings and less time spent in airports for you when you could already be enjoying your holiday.
- Choose an eco-friendly hotel.
- Pre-book your airport parking with Bright Skies.
- Offset your trip through carbon balancing:
- Find out how your flight is going to impact the environment by using the World Land Trust’s carbon calculator.
Things you can do while you’re away:
- Many hotels allow you to use the same sheets and towels again instead of changing them every day and causing mountains of laundry. Make sure you opt in.
- Turn off the lights and air-conditioning in your hotel or apartment when you aren’t using them.
- Travel light – the heavier your suitcase the heavier the plane and the more fuel it will need to burn to fly.
- Buy local products. This avoids the unnecessary transfer of goods from overseas.
- Don’t litter, and don’t remove anything from its natural environment – everything has a purpose in its own ecosystem.
- Think about how you get around:
- Walk or hire a bike
- Use local transport
- If you need to rent a car, rent one with a hybrid engine.
